Henrietta and Barb

Black, white, and pink ink illustration of a woman in bed, with a chicken perched on her head. The woman is lifting one corner of her sleep mask and looking annoyed.
Black and white and pink illustration of a woman singing, brushing her hair, and putting on deoderant. At her feet is a preening chicken.

Meet Henrietta and Barb! Barb is Henrietta’s human. Every morning, Henrietta has the task of waking her human up and letting her know it’s time to get up and start the morning routine.

Together, Henrietta and Barb do their morning preening. Henrietta always listens politely while Barb practices her morning opera.

Black and white and red ink illustration of a woman bending over with a chicken perched on her back. The woman is looking for a matching pair of shoes from lots of shoes that are scattered across the floor in front of her.

Then it’s tea time! Sometimes Barb gets distracted, and Henrietta has to help her finish the tea before it goes cold.

Now, which shoes to wear?

Black and white and red illustration of a woman putting a collar on a chicken, like she is getting ready to take her for a walk. There is a leash at their feet.

Now comes the most important time of the day. Henrietta selects her favorite collar, and Barb fastens it on for her. Oh la la! Doesn’t she look glamorous?

Black and white and red children's book illustration of a woman strutting proudly across a city square with her pet chicken on a leash in front of her. There is a row of shops in the background, and other people, all walking dogs, looking surprised and amused at the site of a lady walking a chicken.

Henrietta and Barb strut confidently through the city streets. Everyone stares because, well, it’s not often that you see such a sophisticated pair!

I’ve always loved chickens. When I was little, my brother and I used to take our chickens for walks…or at least we tried. They were never quite as cooperative as Henrietta though!
